The Pack Mom Daily Bite: Backpacks to Carry Dogs

Backpacks to Carry Dogs -- powered by ehow

Did you know that over 80% of dogs and cats travel on vacation with their parents nowadays? This means that pets are taking plane flights, are boating up the coast and are also the sidekick on hiking treks, biking trips and everything else. So when we think about backpacks to carry dogs, it’s not that far fetched right?

How do you choose the right backpack?

  1. Choose a backpack that is well ventilated ensuring plenty of fresh air for your pet.
  2. The backpack should be roomy; your dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lay down if they want to.
  3. An attachment for your dog’s harness is my preference.

For the eHow shoot, I found a doggie backpack at PetSmart.  The $70+ price tag gave me a large, well ventilated backpack that converted into a crate as well.  Pretty cool I thought.  If I ever need to carry my 17lb Chico on a hike, he will be comfortable….me…not so much!

To get your dog used to a backpack before the trip:

  1. Try making the backpack more interesting to your dog before you take your first trip. Have your opened backpack on the ground.
  2. Throw treats and toys inside and allow your dog to get in and out at his leisure.  This is quite the same as you would get him used to a crate.
  3. By the time you are ready for your first trip, your dog will be used to the feel and texture of the backpack and hopefully he’ll be much more comfortable.

Happy travels this summer and make sure to send in pictures of your trip!
