Carrots- Our Early Morning Dog Treat of Choice

I am sure many of you do this already, but for me, waking up at 5am is brand new. I love my sleep and usually function better on a full eight hours of sweet zzz’s.
But now, just to get things accomplished, I wake up with the roosters. Bad news is…so do the dogs. They drag themselves out of bed and follow me from room to room, get comfy and then the whining begins. They want their breakfast.
So, to appease them, they each get a carrot. A big carrot. Huge sometimes. In fact, as I write this, they are both enthusiastically chomping away.
Why carrots? Well, there are many reasons.
1. Carrots are fibrous and make Abe and Chico feel full (or I assume this b/c they leave me alone for a while).
2. They are low calorie. Approximately 50%+ of our pet population is OBESE. Carrots help keep Abe and Chico trim and fit.
3. Carrots keeps my dogs regular. In fact, raw carrots are not easily digested by dogs so what they eat usually comes right back out the other end. Yes, their poops are orange!
4. Carrots are nutrient rich. So, what they are digesting is healthy. Full of vitamin A, high in fiber, vitamins B6, C and K, potassium, niacin, magnesium and folate.
Here is a great article on pet obesity and healthy treats by WebMD. It quotes one of my favorite vets Dr. Ernie Ward.
That is my morning trick and I am sticking to it. It is also my pre dinner trick as well. What works for your pets? Any tips on low cal treats to fill them up between meals?

My dogs ADORE carrots! They go crazy when you say bones and even understand what carrots are and go all nutty when you say it 🙂 Their favorite snack!
