The Yellow Dog Project- a Simple Solution for Dogs Who Need Space
I think that I was put on this planet to be a mom for anxious dogs. Abe, my lab mix, is such a love but for a long time could be a real butt head to other dogs. Before I learned to understand his signals (all fear based), he could occasionally act out to the friendly pooch wanting to greet him. Now that I know what to look for however, life is much easier. The Yellow Dog Project would have certainly helped me along the way though.
The Yellow Dog Project is such a simple yet brilliant idea. If your dog needs space while walking, tie a yellow ribbon around his leash. The goal is to have “yellow” become the global sign that a dog needs space.
Not every dog needs space because of aggression however. They could need space because they are in training, have health issues or are being rehabilitated from an injury. All good reasons to wear the color yellow.
Once we had a better understanding of our dog Abe, Chico arrived on the scene. And, believe it or not, Chico was even worse with dogs. Geez. But eventually, with strong leadership (and lots of baby gates), the boys became friends and are now official buddies. Not a gate in site..other than the one that remains to give them a break from toddler Sebastian.
I had recently blogged about our training with Chico. It is something we work on each and every day. But, he is a member of our family and we will do everything we can to make him a productive member of society 🙂 Even if all he ever produces are lots of doggy kisses…and a loads of fertilizer!
So, will you help me make The Yellow Dog Project a global mission? They have almost 4,000 likes on facebook and they started their FB page in Septmeber 2012! You can help spread the word by downloading a flyer and hanging it in your local pet store, vet’s office, coffee shop, etc. Let’s keep dogs in loving homes by making life a bit easier for pet moms (and dads)!
