Westminster Wrap Up- The Pack Mom
I have rescue dogs. Period. Abe, the lab mix and Chico, the Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix are my heart. Don’t know what I would do without those dogs. Abe is so handsome. His coat is chocolate with tinges of fawn downy fur and black single coat here and there. Chico is, well, Chico is funny and a little bit funny looking. Love them all the same.
Although my heart is with a rescue dog, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the Westminster dog show this week. Over 187 breeds and 2,800 dogs represented. Dogs hailed from all 50 states and 15 countries. In fact, the winner, Sky the wire fox terrier, resides in Mexico.
Ally the Standard Poodle, Classy the Miniature Pinscher, Nathan the Bloodhound, Riley the Irish Water Spaniel, Coco the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Matisse the Portugese Water Dog joined Sky in the 138th annual Westminster Best in Show. All gorgeous and deemed the best of their breed, best of their group and any one of them could have been the winner.
That is why I love Westminster. Learning about each breed, what they are meant to do, and then trying to put the puzzle pieces together when looking at the all American Heinz 57.
The last estimate I read from the Humane Society of the United States Pet Ownership Survey was that over 25% of shelter dogs are purebred. And those who are not of a distinct lineage are a cool mix of two, three or more.
Three new breeds were welcomed to Westminster this year. The Portugese Podengo Pequeno (say that three times fast), the Rat Terrier and the Chinook. A hound, terrier and working dog. Awesome. These in no way are new breeds of dog (the Podengo dates back to antiquity), just new to Westminster. To be part of the Westminster, the breed needs to have a certain number of dogs in the USA and strong support nationwide.
Considering a new dog? Interested in a breed you saw in the Westminster dog show? Good! There is a rescue for that breed! I can almost guarantee.
Pico (pictured above) is a Rat Terrier mix and is being fostered by the good folks at Dogma Pet Rescue. What a cutie! Check out the American Kennel Club site to find rescue information for the breed you are interested in OR visit your local shelter for a couture canine 🙂
