National Dog Day- 5 Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Dog
They are loyal, full of love and impact our lives every day. Today is National Dog Day- a day to celebrate the dogs in our lives and to think about dogs in shelters across our country. Have you considered adopting a dog?
Here are 5 good reasons why to consider it:
Save a life– the reality is, 6-8 million of dogs and cats enter shelters each year. Just about half of these animals do not make it out of the shelter. There is simply not enough room or enough time for them to wait. And, more dogs are being born every day, adding to our countries pet overpopulation problem. Adopting a dog is truly saving a life.
You Make Room for Another Dog at the Shelter– Shelters are limited in space. Adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group will give another dog space and time to find a new home. It really all about time and space.
You can find puppies, pure breds and dogs with manners– Some people might be surprised to know that many dogs in shelters are potty trained and have a few manners under their belt. You can also find puppies and purebred dogs in shelters and rescue organizations. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that 25% of dogs in shelters are Purebred.
Cost is less– When adopting from a shelter, dogs are typically spayed or neutered and Microchipped when they are adopted. They have received some sort of medical care as well. The upfront costs of pet ownership are less when you adopt a pet. Now, this is not promising that medical issues will not pop up down the road. When adopting or purchasing any pet- food, treats, vet visits and overall care should be considered and budgeted.
Unconditional love– The human animal bond is a strong one. The American Heart Association has linked pet ownership to reduced risk of heart disease and greater longevity. Many times the pet you save, saves you.
