Pet food.  Probably one of my favorite things to talk about.  Seriously.  Call me a nerd if you will; I gladly respond to that name, especially when it comes to the pet food industry.  I have studied cat and dog food for at least ten years and my two furboys get quite the variety in my house.  Dry, canned and yes, raw are all fair game.   If the dog food is natural, grain free, from a respectable company and contains high quality, properly sourced ingredients I let them try it.  When Nature’s Variety contacted me a few weeks ago and asked me to review their Instinct Raw Boost dog food, I was happy to do so.

You might be wondering what  Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost is exactly?  Well, it is  a novel way to add  raw nutrition to your dog or cat’s diet in my opinion.  Nature’s Variety starts with their all natural, high protein, grain free, dry kibble and boosts the nutrition by including  freeze dried raw food right in the bag.  Literally, they take raw ingredients, combine and freeze dry them and add them to the 4.4lb, 13.2lb or 25.3lb bag.

You can see it in every scoop.

I have fed Nature’s Variety frozen raw food to my boys for years, but had not tried the Instinct Raw Boost dry food yet.  So, I was excited to get started.  A fellow pet parent, Emily, also tested the product with her active dog Brittany.  Abe and Chico (my boys) ate the Venison & Lamb Meal formula and Brittany had the Chicken Meal Formula.

Here’s is what we liked:

1.  Resealable bag made for easy storage.

2.  Visible pieces of freeze dried food throughout.

3.  Easy transition from old food to Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost.

4.  Smaller stools (yay!  less poop to scoop!).

5.  Shiny coats.

6.  More energy.

7.   Our dogs ate less and didn’t seem hungry.

8.  Convenient and safe way to add raw nutrition to pet food.

What we want more of:

1.  Pieces of freeze dried raw nutrition.  They were throughout the bag, but we would like to see even more without making it price prohibitive.

2.  Single protein varieties perhaps.  Or, more protein combinations.  Lamb is included in three of the dog formulas.  Perhaps a beef/salmon?

We recommend this if:

1.  Your dog is active, healthy and ready for a nutrition boost.  The freeze dried raw pieces are pure nutrition.  Nothing has been cooked or extruded out.

2.  You have wanted to try feeding your dog or cat raw, but haven’t wanted to deal with frozen raw food.  This is a good way to introduce raw freeze dried nutrition into their diet.

3.  You have a finicky dog or cat.  This might eliminate the need to “top” their food with something else.

Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost is a high protein, grain free diet that is balanced and complete for dogs and cats.  The protein and fat content are high given the amount of meat and quality ingredients used.  If you have a senior pet, non active pet or a pet with a medical condition, please check with your veterinarian prior to making any dietary switch.

Variety is the spice of life!  For my dogs anyway.  Thanks for reading our review on Natures Variety Instinct Raw Boost and let us know if you try it with your dog or cat.
